A few of my friends are planning to tailgate at an upcoming LSU game (Go Tigers!)…. Just like old times… except the girls decided we needed to step up our tailgate game! As my friend Lori said, “We need to class things up!” The boys seemed fine with the tailgate fare of our college days that mostly included grilled meats and beer… but I couldn’t agree with the girls more. With a little effort, we can make a healthier tailgate.

(Cory and I at a LSU Tailgate a couple years ago!)

Here are some tips for a healthier tailgate-

-Switch to baked chips instead of regular chips

-Use salsa instead of a high fat dip

-Bring fruit and/or veggie trays with low fat dip

-Choose the leanest cuts of meats and poultry for the grill (burgers using extra lean ground meat and/or chicken breast)

-Throw some vegetables on the grill (asparagus with a little olive oil and salt & pepper has been a huge hit at the last few BBQs I’ve gone to!)

-Bring whole wheat hamburger buns as an option

-Bring water!!!

Hope these tips help you plan healthier tailgates during this football season

Today is World Vegetarian Day! While I’m not a vegetarian, I do consume plant-based meals on a regular basis. Plant-based foods are rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals. Antioxidants protect the body from harmful free radicals. Phytochemicals have protective or disease preventive properties as well. Carefully planned vegetarian diets can improve obesity, coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and diverticular disease. They also may decrease the chances of breast cancer, colon cancer, and gallstones.

The world of vegetarianism can be quite confusing… there are four basic types of vegetarians:

        Semi-vegetarians- avoid red meat

Lactovegetarians- avoid eggs, meat, poultry, and fish

Ovovegetarians- avoid meat, poultry, fish, and dairy

Vegans- avoid meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy

If you are a vegetarian or choose to dabble in the world of vegetarianism, here are a few general healthy guidelines…

-minimize intake of less nutritious foods such as sweets and fatty foods

-choose whole or unrefined grain products (example- 100% whole wheat bread instead of white bread)

-choose a variety of nuts, seeds, beans, fruits, and vegetables

-choose low-fat or nonfat varieties of dairy products

Some of my favorite meat-free meals are red beans and rice with a green vegetable on the side, cheese pizza with a salad, and black bean burritos!

It’s starting to actually feel like fall down here in New Orleans… well, if you consider 80 degrees fall weather The amazing weather made my weekly grocery trip much more enjoyable. Here is a picture of my purchases…

   -Local Satsumas

-Organic Kiwis, Raspberries, Strawberries, Spinach, Zuchinni

   -Bananas

   -Almond Milk

-Kashi Honey Sunshine Cereal- one of my favorite cereals.

   -Guacamole packets

-Larabars- I am obsessed with larabars… they are a great, quick snacks and made with 100% real fruit & nuts.

-Annie’s Whole Wheat Mac & Cheese

-Pad Thai Noodles- I like to bulk up these noodles with shrimp and lots of veggies.

   -Almonds

-Lean ground meat- for our weekly Taco Thursday Dinner!

-2 bottles of Wine- Cory and I are huge vino lovers

-Specialty Gouda Cheese- I sampled this in the store and decided it was a perfect food pairing for the wine.

-Onion, Tomatoes, Chili Peppers, Mexican Cheese Blend, & Light Sour Cream- all for an Avocado & Crab Quesadillas recipe I plan on making this week. Can you believe I couldn’t find low fat shredded cheese at Whole Foods?!

   -Papertowels

All of this for $82 (before tax)… I took advantage of some sales and had a couple coupons. Luckily, the freezer is stocked with local crab, shrimp, and fish. The fridge still has lots of staples like eggs, WW (whole wheat) tortillas, WW pasta, WW bread, and my beloved almond butter

Hope everyone is having a great week and enjoying some nice weather!
