TJ in his Transformer pose- very serious!

Talan in his Transformer pose- so adorable!

We went trick or treating in my mom’s neighborhood… some houses went all out with the Halloween decorations… we saw a blow-up Haunted House…

We also saw an Electric Chair (which was the talk of the neighborhood!)…

Kiley (my sister) and I dressed up too…

The boys came home with tons of candy…

We checked all the candy for tampering before the kids got to eat any… Kiley made sure they had a healthy dinner before the “trick or treating” so the candy served as dessert. I was actually surprised that each boy only ate about 2-3 pieces of candy despite the huge pile of temptation! Although Talan was very happy knowing all this candy was coming home with him…

I recommend storing the candy out of your children’s sight and rationing out the treats to avoid a candy overload!

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!

Once research surfaced that a chemical found in many plastics we use everday may be toxic, I made some changes at home to reduce our exposure. The potentially harmful chemical is called Bisphenol A (BPA) which can be found in plastic food containers, certain kinds of plastic bottles, plastic eating utensils, and linings of canned goods. BPA overtime with use and when exposed to heat may leach from plastic containers into our food and beverages.

Research links BPA exposure to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure along with adverse effects on the brain, reproductive system, and liver function.

The first step of action at home was to replace the refillable plastic water bottles Cory and I were using… I ordered SIGG bottles (made from aluminum):

Next, I contacted Brita to confirm their water filters and pitchers were BPA-free. I received an email reassuring me their products were safe…

“Our products do not contain any bisphenol A (BPA) and are all tested by the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) for safety and wetted contact.”

Then, I passed on the concern to my family. I even bought my mom a SIGG and brita water pitcher for her birthday present.

What are some things you can do to prevent BPA exposure?

use glass, aluminum, or stainless steel bottles

do not put plastic food containers in the microwave or dishwasher

cut back on canned foods (instead buy fresh ingredients)

How are you doing to reduce your contact with BPA?
