5 Ideas for Making Fitness Fun and Social

Jan 28

Getting fit and healthy is one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions, but unfortunately it is also one of the hardest to keep. Have you bought yourself a gym membership and gone along for a few weeks bursting with enthusiasm, only to find yourself skipping days and then cancelling your membership altogether? If so, don’t be deterred from keeping fit – exercise does not have to be boring, and it can be lots of fun and very sociable if you go about it in the right way.

1. Play a Team Sport

If you play a team sport, staying fit automatically becomes more fun. You get to meet people and bond with them as you take on other teams, and suddenly keeping fit becomes something that just happens on the side. You’ll find that you enjoy going along more, and it can turn into more of a social event than an attempt to drop a few pounds.

2. Join a League

If you really want to enjoy yourself, joining up with a league is a great idea. This adds the element of competition to your activity and gives you a real goal to focus on. You will also find that you make friends along the way, making it a very social way to stay fit.

There are so many different sports to choose from when you join a league, so check out what is available in your area. If you live in London, try out Go Mammoth, which has a huge range of options for sports leagues across the city.

3. Try Something New

If you have played football, rugby or any of the more traditional sports in the past, why not try something new? If you start up a new activity as a beginner, you may find that there is less pressure, meaning you can focus more on having fun. Why not invite one of your friends along and both be beginners together? If you are looking for possible ideas for new sports, try something a bit different like dodgeball, ultimate frisbee or flag football.

4. Get Your Workmates Involved

If you join a team game or a league, it may be a good idea to get your workmates involved as well. Find somewhere near to the office where you can all go together after work, and this will provide you with a great way to socialise outside of work hours. It’s easy to arrange and is a fantastic way to have fun and keep fit at the same time.

5. Only Do What You Enjoy

The fact is, no matter how much effort you put into something, if you don’t enjoy the activity you will never keep it up. If you are struggling to go to the gym each week because you don’t enjoy it, you’re fighting a losing battle.

If you try an activity and it does not work out, try something else whether it is football, netball, rugby or something completely different. If you enjoy the actual activity, it will not seem like a chore, and before you know it you’ll be fit as a fiddle.

Get Active This Year

If you are putting off getting fit because you have got it into your head that it is hard work and boring, then think again. There are loads of ways to make keeping fit more fun, and you can also meet lots of new people while doing so. So take another look through the ideas above and then start thinking about what you can do to get fit and active this year while enjoying yourself at the same time.

  1. It’s so crucial to do what you love, because willpower seems to more easily walk out the door when you dread that exercise. Having a friend to who you will be accountable really helps keep you in check too.

  2. Philosophy on Fitness and Wellness: I think fitness is something that should be fun and something that you love to do. It can be a way to connect with friends and make new ones!

  3. Some good tips here, many of us don’t particularly like going to the gym but feel they need to and I am kind of like that. What find useful is going to the gym with somebody else, especially when weight training. The social aspect is still there whilst we can encourage one another to achieve the best results.

The most important thing is to find something you enjoy and you can then build from that.
