Product Reviews and Some Random Facts

Posted on January 18th, 2010, by Kasey

Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend.  My weekend was pretty amazing because the Saints WON!!!  Of course, I’m now nervous for our 2nd playoff game.  Other than football watching, I accomplished a lot of wedding planning for not only my wedding but also my best friend- Claudia’s wedding.  Claud is very indecisive so I helped her pick out her wedding invitations along with a couple hours of jewelry and shoe shopping.  I also tried some new food products this weekend that I want to share.

Starting with my least favorite… Terra Crinkles- Sweet Potato Chips/Candied Sweets.  Cory grabbed these at the grocery the other day and I said “Sure, why not? Let’s try a different variety.”  I kind of get final approval over everything that goes into the grocery cart;  that’s what happens when you are marrying a dietitian!  Anyways, I thought I would love these as much as I love the regular sweet potato variety.

Well, I was mistaken because I could literally eat only one chip!  If Cory does not like them, I will probably throw them away.  I guess I dislike “candied” chips.  Although, the nutritionals are just as good as the regular sweet potato variety with healthy fats, low sodium, and 3 grams of fiber per serving.  On a taste scale of 1 to 10, I give them a 2.  Oh well, you win some and you lose some.

The next new food, Kashi’s Autumn Wheat Cereal, did not disappoint.  In fact, I’m bummed out that I cannot eat it this morning for breakfast because we ran out of milk yesterday.  I love the lightly sweetened whole wheat biscuits.  If you’re not a fan of soggy cereal, watch out because the cereal does turn mushy after sitting in milk for a few minutes.  Personally, I don’t mind soggy cereal.

The nutritional stats are great with 6 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, and 7 grams of sugar per serving.  I usually recommend at least 3 grams of fiber and less than 8 grams of sugar per serving of cereal.  On a taste scale from 1 to 10, I give this 8.5.

Last but certainly not least, Sabra’s Luscious Lemon Hummus is my new obsession!  The extra lemon flavor brings out such a fantastically fresh taste.

I had some with a whole wheat tortilla yesterday as a snack and it was delicious.  Sabra brand is my favorite for hummus because it is so creamy and smooth.  I recommend hummus with 100% whole grain crackers/pita or raw vegetables (carrots, celery, bell pepper, etc.) as a healthy snack idea to my patients all the time.  Sometimes, I get a blank look with the question “What’s hummus?”   Hummus is grounded up cooked chick peas (aka garbanzos) often mixed with olive or canola oil, tahini (ground sesame), lemon juice, and garlic.  One serving (2 Tablespoons) of this hummus contains 70 calories, 6 grams of fat (mostly healthy unsaturated fats), 1 gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.  On a taste scale from 1 to 10, I give this a 9!

Have you tried any of the products I reviewed?  What is your favorite breakfast cereal?

A big THANKS to Corinne and Lindsey for both nominating me for the Beautiful Blogger Award!!!

Apparently, I must share 7 fun/random facts about myself and then nominate 7 fabulous bloggers for the award!  Okay, here goes…

1.  I have the ugliest FEET ever!  Seriously, it was recommended that I get foot surgery to correct my bunions.  Seventeen years of dancing took a toll on my feet.  Good thing Cory doesn’t have some kind of foot fetish!

2.  Really silly REALITY TV  shows help me de-stress… Real Housewives, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, The Hills/The City, etc.  Mindless almost mind numbing TV relaxes me after a busy day.  I usually enjoy this guilty pleasure when Cory is busy because he is not a fan of most reality TV shows.

3.  Another thing that helps me de-stress (other than a glass of wine) is CLEANING.  If something is on my mind or I’m stressed, I will clean and organize anything in my path.

4.  I have terrible VISION.  I am severely near-sighted with –8.5 prescription contacts which basically means without my glasses or contacts if you were standing a couple feet away from me, all I would see is a blurry outline of a figure.  I started wearing glasses in kindergarten!

5.  I am a major BAG LADY.  In my everyday purse you can find items such as extra contacts, contact solution, my make-up bag (even though I usually don’t wear make-up to work), a brush, lotion, camera (I’m sure you bloggers understand the need for a camera), Larabars/nuts/apples or oranges, SIGG water bottle, and my planner.  I weighed my purse the other day and it was 7.8 pounds!!!  It’s pretty ridiculous.

6.  I am always COLD.  I was recently diagnosed with Raynaud’s Syndrome.  Basically, whenever I’m cold or stressed out my fingers and toes will turn purplish blue.

7.  If I was not a RD, I would love to work in the fashion industry or be a professional organizer just like the woman on that show Neat.

1.  Carissa from Fit To Indulge

2.  Mo from Mommy RD

Thanks SO MUCH for the award!! That was sweet of you :) Congrats on winning yourself!

I’m laughing over here because your trips to the grocery store sound a lot like Nick and my trips. I always get final approval, and I’d be shocked if he ever put those chips in our cart! He goes for the salty regular ones, which I say “OK” to every once in a while. I have tried those candied sweet potato chips, and like you I would much prefer the regular sweet potato variety (un-candied). They weren’t awful, but I didn’t enjoy them as much as the regular flavor of their chips.

As for the cereal, I actually have that here at home! That was one of the cereals that Nick “really wanted to try” but that has been in our kitchen for about 3 months now. I don’t eat wheat, and he barely ever eats breakfast, therefore why did we buy it?! When I DO eat wheat (a little) I will put a couple of those in my bowl, and like you I LOVE soggy cereal! So this one get’s an A from me :)

    Andrea@WellnessNotes Says:

Sorry you were disappointed in the chips… The hummus sounds great. I love hummus, and almost always eat it with cucumbers, carrots, & mini peppers. And Sabra is soooo good and creamy. This year, I wan to make my own hummus a bit more often. We see how it goes…

Loved learning 7 facts about you! We don’t have cable t.v. anymore, but I’m always glued to the t.v. at the gym and watch any trashy t.v. show I can during my cardio. I love the shows you mentioned… ;)

Congrats on the award, and thanks for passing it on to me!!!

    Have a great week!

Kasey, BIG congrats on the award, and thanks so much for nominating me!!

I love your 7 things. I think cleaning is a good destressor too. And I’m a closet follower of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. I don’t know what it is, but its like watching a train wreck.. I can’t look away!!! :)

Thanks for the food reviews. I’ve tried the Terra chips. Love them, but I haven’t tried the candied ones. Is that Kashi wheat new, I haven’t seen it before? And I dooo like soggy cereal for dinner. Six grams of fiber is pretty darn good.

As usual, I love your blog. Happy Monday.

Katie- LOL… I don’t think the hummus tastes like cleaner products! Cory said it tastes like Lemon Cookies without the cookie?!

Carissa- I think the cereal has been out for a while but I can’t find it at every store. You are totally right about Keeping Up with the Kardashians; it is like watching a train wreck!

I love sabra hummus but haven’t tried the lemon flavor yet. It’s funny cause if I wasn’t an RD, I would probably do something in fashion also.
