Eating at a Birthday Party

Yesterday was my godson’s 5th Birthday Party.  My sister had a huge train spacewalk to entertain the kiddies…

What are some strategies to eating healthy at a party that you have no control over food served?

  • Eat a healthy meal before the party.  If you are hungry when you arrive, you are more likely to overeat on finger foods such as chips and sandwiches.
  • Fill up on the fruits and/or vegetables trays.
  • Skip the hot dog and have just the homemade chili on a bun (save about ~150 calories and ~13 gm fat for each hot dog skipped)
  • Choose the tortilla chips with salsa instead of the tortilla chips with nacho cheese.
  • Drink Calorie Free drinks such as water
  • Have a small piece of cake! Everything in moderation :)

  1. I like your strategies!

I agree, for me the key is not going when I’m very hungry. Also, I try to take a minute and make a mental plan to decide what I’m going to eat. In the past, I would give myself permission to just eat anything since it was a special occasion. Not such a great plan…

    The train spacewalk looks amazing!

Special occasion happen pretty regularly… birthday parties, weddings, baby/bridal showers, anniversaries, etc. Having a plan is key!

The kids had an absolute blast with that spacewalk :)
