Do It Yourself Taco Seasoning

Many of my patients follow a Low Sodium Diet due to high blood pressure… a major concern is “How will my food taste good without salt?”  This recipe for taco seasoning is a perfect example of how you can eat low salt foods without sacrificing flavor.  It has taken me a few months to master the ingredients but I think I have finally found my perfect taco seasoning recipe.

Taco Seasoning

Taco Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Oregano

Notes:

1) Make sure to use Garlic Powder and Onion Powder and not Garlic Salt and Onion Salt.

2) Mix the seasoning plus ~1/4 cup of water with one pound of cooked meat such as extra lean ground meat or chicken and simmer for ~2-4 minutes.

This “do it yourself” recipe is salt-free compared to the taco seasoning packets found at the grocery that can have ~400-500 mg of sodium. Cory loves tacos so we eat them almost every week… I usually serve the seasoned meat with 100% whole wheat tortillas, guacamole, salsa, low-fat shredded Mexican cheese, and fat free refried beans.
